Thursday April 22nd marked the 2010 international celebration of Earth Day. In support of Earth Day, conservation program Reef Alliance and its sponsor companies, Snuba International and Sub Sea Systems, hosted its second annual “Reef Alliance Day.” International Reef Alliance members participated in the “Kids Care Project” –– involving 5th grade school children and a conservation awareness poster contest. Members visited local classrooms and talked to kids about the importance of keeping our oceans, beaches and reefs clean; with an emphasis on the impact of trash and debris on marine life. Students were then invited to participate in a poster contest, highlighting ways to keep our beaches and oceans clean.

Reef Alliance Day 2010 involved participants from all over the world. Although all members put forth a great effort, two members in particular organized and completed outstanding projects…

2nd Place

The 2010 2nd Place Reef Alliance Award is presented to CORAL WORLD OCEAN PARK, in St. Thomas, for their excellent community involvement and achievement. The Reef Alliance members at Coral World Ocean Park invited students from two local schools, Antilles School and Church of God Academy, to participate in the poster contest. The students submitted beautifully creative posters that perfectly captured the theme of the “Kids Care Project.” In addition, the team at Coral World participated in their annual beach and reef cleanups throughout Earth Week, collecting nearly 50 bags of trash and an innumerable amount of debris (anchors, car batteries, tires, lead weights, fenders, and more!). Congratulations Coral World on your incredible achievement!

1st Place

The 2010 1st Place Reef Alliance Award is presented to XEL-HA PARK, near Tulum, Mexico, for outstanding organization, effort, education and commitment to conservation. The Xel-Ha Reef Alliance team selected an organization committee to run their project. Members included: Miryam Vial, Saitra Pérez, Diana Fernández, Rosanna Roth, Hilda Berriel and Raúl Cocom. The organization committee visited 8 schools in two towns: Chemuyil and Tulum. There were over 86 posters submitted to the contest, and 3 winners were selected from each school. The 24 winners were invited to participate in an organized beach cleanup at a local beach, Xcacelito. There were more than 80 volunteers at the beach cleanup event, including the 24 student winners. The winners and their teachers were also rewarded with a day at Xel-Ha eco-park. The students and teachers participated in an interactive Manatee experience and a Snuba tour. Xel-Ha’s extensive project and group effort truly exemplifies the goals of the 2010 Reef Alliance Day project. The Reef Alliance Executive board proudly awards Xel-Ha as the winner of the 2010 1st Place Reef Alliance Award.
Reef Alliance thanks all of the members for their participation in the 2010 Kids Care Project. We congratulate the winners and hope that the competition is equally as strong for next year’s project!
